Hodes bases his article largely on the story of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who took the helm in 2014. Nadella, explains Hodes, largely focused on the advantages of a growth mindset – those with a life-long learning lean – among employees, in regard to outcome, results, and even overall productivity.
Hodes goes on to explain that this concept was largely birthed by psychologist Carol Dweck, who theorized that talented wins out over smart almost every time within individuals and especially, as it relates to individuals in the workplace.
When examining why this is true, Hodes elaborates, “With a fixed mindset, you pretty much think you know and can do, all you need to know and do, simply because you’re ‘smart.’ As a result, you’re not real likely to seek out more knowledge and/or to improve your skills and acumen. You’re also more likely to be frustrated and get stuck when faced with seemingly insurmountable issues.”
He adds, “On the other hand, with a growth mindset, you think you have room to get better and smarter with effort—hard work and dedication. You also deal with setbacks better, choosing to focus on future opportunities instead of past ‘failures’.”
